Academic writing had always seemed dauntingly boring to a person like myself, who thrives on witty retorts and creativity. Which is probably why the first phrase that stuck with me from all the academic writing sessions I went to was that academic writing doesn't have to be boring, theory forward text pieces. Of course, this does not mean that academic writing suddenly becomes a haven devoid of rules. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to be interesting while keeping one's controlling idea in mind.

Rules are paramount, especially when it comes to a concept of the likes of academic writing, which is expected to be uniform and concise. The very first class was relevant in this respect. It took us through the framework of academic texts and what drives an academic perspective forward. We also paid particular attention to the various divisions that makes a text distinct. It was interesting to consider that an academically inclined text could take multiple paths and voices, according to the priority of the text.

Rules also include what can and cannot be done in a particular area. The second class of the week was an exercise in the constrains of academic writing. It emphasised the importance of clear, concise, fact oriented writing that effectively presents and argues ones perspective to the reader. The session was made more interactive and captivating by the clever 'memes' spread out through the presentation material. It was most definitely a factor that held my attention.

The week's sessions were, hence, a welcoming initiation into the world of academic writing. They helped me understand the scope and significance of academic writing and its forms in the current scenario. Academic writing is a skill of utmost importance in academic circles and it was a invigorating lesson to be acquainted with.
